You
are Omar, a gay Pakistani.
You live with your
father, who is called "Papa" by everyone, in a small, ugly flat
in South London near the railway lines from the suburbs into Charing Cross
or London Bridge. In your surroundings there are some conflicts between
different ethnic and social minorities. As a Pakistani you are a member
of one of these groups. Beside the cultural characteristic it is typical
of Pakistanis (most of them are your relatives) that they have managed to live
a life in relative prosperity by means of hard work. Your best friend
(who is even a bit more than just your "best friend") Johnny
belongs to the opposite party. The members of his gang, who are hostile to
the Pakistanis, are not really known for their good manners or their willingness
to work hard. They are lazy, unfriendly hooligans. No one of them has
a regular job, so that they even are too poor to afford a flat. Instead,
they live as squatters. These houses are mostly owned by Pakis, which is
one of the reasons for the conflicts. The hooligans are members of the
neo-fascist National- Front.
Your father was once
a popular journalist in Pakistan, but he failed in Britain. He is a socialist
and a very warm-hearted man, so he sometimes lacks this unscrupulous entrepreneurial
spirit. Now, he is only a self-destructive wreck. He keeps sitting in
his flat and drinking gallons of cheap alcohol. Your uncle Nasser is the
head of your family. Nasser has a wife, Bilquis, and a mistress, Rachel.
He also has a few daughters, one of them is Tania. His hard work in his
car-park and his houses have made him a rich man. He also owns a laundrette.
Because you proved your qualities, you have been promoted to be the manager
of this place. With the help of your friend Johnny, you turned the laundry
from a dump into a profitable, clean and secure business. This laundry
is extremely important for you - it gives you a chance to reach your aim:
Contrary to your father you want to make fast money that allows you to
live a life similar to that of your uncles with big houses and fast cars.
"I want big money. I'm not gonna be beaten by this country",
you once said to Johnny.
Salim is your other uncle. His prosperity is comparable to Nasser's, but
Salim also runs some special businesses: He often deals with drugs.
No one in your family
knows about your homosexuality, so everybody in your family, due to the
initiative of Papa, now expects you to get married. And this is your problem...
